[SOLVED] SSHd is running, but cant connect "Network error: Connection refused"

Hi, i checked on rhel VPS is running sshd
(service ssh status)

But i cant connect via putty: "Network error: Connection refused"

Please which log file in my centos rhel linux i need to watch or what are steps to do to discover cause?

1. ping server IP from your remote PC (sometime ping may not be success because of ICMP echo settings)
2. telnet to port 22 from your remote PC
If both success you should be able to SSH to the Server.
If not,
Make sure sshd listening on which port (by default 22)
Check the iptables, /etc/hosts.deny

you can check the /var/log/messages, /var/log/secure or /var/log/audit/audit.log

Thank you, the issue was in /etc/ssh/sshd_config
where there was set some unusual ssh port (not 22).

Ya, for some security reason people use some unusual ports..
