hey, im new to Linux and are fooling around to see what i can do i installed Mandrake 7.2 and want to see about getting an ESS1869 sound card to work with it. ESSTech has no drivers on their website and there is nothing on Mandrake's page. I was wondering if there is a way i could set the sound to a generic sound card or something similar? Thx!

Sound card

yes it is supported in linux. look in /usr/src/linux/documentation/sound and look for a file referring to your card. that should tell you what module (driver in windows speak) you'll need to load in to the kernel.

i know this card is supported due to the Linux Hardware Compatibility list at Linux Documentation Project. check it out if you want to know whether any of your hardware is supported.]

Hmm....I dont have the documentation in the usr/src/ folder.
I have the folders "linux" and "linux - 2.2.17" neither of those folders have documentation in it. is there any other place where it would be?

if you don;t have the documentation there then you haven;t got the kernel sources installed (they are a wee bit big).

there should be an rpm on your cd or you can download the latest kernel from www.kernel.org.

P.S. it naughty to post across forums, some people get quite pissed by it.

sorry you have to look in the linux folder (which is actually a link to the linux-2.2.17 folder)

is it isn;t there then look above
