sound stopped working

not sure what happened
my sound _was_ working for a while. this morning when i took my laptop to work the sound just stopped working

i'v tried alsa mixer and aumix, all the volume is on high, tried the physical volume switch, the sound works when i dual boot back to windows

games dont have sound , doom 3, my music player juk

i belive these were using oss

i can't get this working again, i just have no idea why it stopped working

i'v done nothing out of the ordanary
<<
also on a side note, when i boot up kde (i used black box now) it will remember what i had open last, i opened 2 terminals and they both appear whenever i boot kde, after restarts for a month now
then sometimes they dissapear, and whatever i was doing last will be saved in 'memory'
is there any way to control this
also, is it bad to turn of x with ctrl alt bkspc :D
<<
thank in advnc linux gurus :P

hmm..sounds a bit odd to me. have you run alsaconf (as root)? try to run it once and detect your card...if it helps. I'm not sure really...I had soundproblems, but they were due to my kernel upgrade and switching from devfs to udev...got them solved though.

and no, killing X with ctrl+alt+backspace isn't dangerous...execpt that if you use an environment like KDE or Gnome, the settings aren't saved I think, so next time you login, you might get some fancy apps launching without any explainment, and so on :) but if you use some wm that doesn't save any settings, killing X is quite the same than using some "Exit" command.

thanks for reply b0uncer,
i just restarted the machine and it worked :!
no idea why :?

/edit

yes i did run alsaconf, and it said it couldnt detect my sound card :!
i have a kernel which i compiled my self, and i could'nt find the exact card in the list, (analog devices, 19** can't remmeber exact name) but the sound does work now and after the kernel fix.

uh....

Don't kill X with Ctrl Alt Backspace, it sends a KILL signal to all X applications and won't let them clean up correctly.
