Angry Sound problems in RH 8.0

hi all,
I have a dell Dimension with Windows Xp/Red hat 8.0 Dual boot. the sound card is Soundblaster Live! Value and I am having trouble playing music.

When I test the soundcard, it seems to work fine (i.e. plays the test tune)
1) When I pop in an audio Cd, the player opens up and pretends to play, but there is no sound although the player gathers the track info etc from the CD. (Have checked mixer settings, cables etc)

2) When I try to play an MP3 file using XMMS, the file just refuses to get on the playlist!! I have tried dragging the file, double clicking etc...the player just cant recognize the file....whats going on?

I'm sure the solution must be someting really simple....

Thanks in advance........

Welcome to LQ.

OK, you've checked the cables... including the one that goes from your CD drive to your sound card? And are you sure that the CD setting is up on your mixer?

go to main menu > sound and video > volume control and adjust the settings here.

as for the MP3 issue, mp3 support has been removed in Red Hat Linux 8.0. you can get the full Xmms package here:

Problems getting sound card configured under RH7.3

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000. I've just installed Redhat 7.3 and cannot get the sound card to work. I've tried using sndconfig selecting the Yamaha OPL3-SA2/3/x driver. It just doesn't seem to work.

Thanks everyone. the mp3 issue was solved by downloading the full Xmms package from http://soraas.student.nlh.no/~havar...-1.2.7-rh8-rpm/

The problem with audio CDs still remains...KsCd plays by no sound comes out. I decided to switch to Xmms to play audio cds using the xmms-cdread 0.14a plugin but had trouble installing it. Has anyone tried to install this plugin in RH 8.0 ? if so please let me know how to do it.
