Sound problem with ESS Technology ES1988 Allegro-1 chipset

Enviornment
Running: Slackware 8.1
Linux kernal version: 2.4.18
Hardware: Compaq Evo N400c
Harddrive: 30GB
Memory: 512MB
Soundcard: ESS Technology ES1988 Allegro-1
Desktop: GNU Window Maker version 0.80.0

Oddly enough, I have read about other sound issues within these forum using the search term "Allegro", however this is my issue:

Problem:

Every other reboot, my sound is muted, you can faintly hear it in the background through external speakers or the internal laptop speaker. At other times, the sound is perfect.

Current Fixes:

1. I have added the line "alias sound-slot-0 maestro3" to /etc/modules.conf

2. I have changed the permissions on the following directory "/dev/dsp" to rw

3. I have uncommented the line "/sbin/modprobe maestro3" in the file /etc/rc.d/rc.modules

I thought this had fixed my problem, however after 4 straight reboots, the problem has shown up again this morning.

Call for help

Anyone's help would be appreciated, I have searched these forums, google.com, documentation with no real success. (Plus, I understand that is a problem with running SuSE 8.1 Personal as well.)

Thank you in advanced and I appreciate your time to help me...

ALSA or OSS (or both)?
Precompiled or custom compiled kernel?
Are mixer levels being restored at boot time?
