Sound killed itself.
I'm runing Mandrake 9.1 and have had no troubles with sound untill now.
I'm using Via onboard sound.
I have always used XMMS but yesterday I tried mpg123 just to see how it worked, it worked okay most of the time but after exiting teh console and returning to xmms it wouldn't work. If I pressed play it would say it was playing the file but the seconds counter and the little scroll bar telling you how far into the song you are didn't start moving.
Other media players worked.
I tried a restart which made the computer crash to a black screen with a mouse cursor which KDE quit. I had to press restart.
When Linux loaded agin none of my music playing apps worked, all behaving in a similar way to xmms, refusing to play anything.
There are no error mesages anywhere and dmesg has nothing unusual.
What could be wrong?
*edit. Things like KDE and GNOME logon/logoff sounds don't work either.
Thanks for any help.

Nope, still doesn't work.
Now a mesage comes up saying ALSA can't access the default sound device so it's using /dev/null instead.
I have just remembered what may have caused it, I did something really stupid when I was learning about pipes.
I ran the comand 'cat /wavfile/ > /dev/sound/dsp/' to see if i could play wav files like that.
I also did it to all the other devices in /dev/sound/ folder.
Sound workes in XP.

I had the same problem, here's the fix. Go in as root and then
chmod 666 /dev/dsp
chmod -R 666 /dev/sound
Just out of curiosity, do you update your packages regularly and did you about the time that your sound stopped working? I'm asking because I suspect an upgrade error in my own case, and looking around it seems as if a number of other people have had this happen in the past few days...
