Sound in Slackware 8.1

I've just installed Slackware for the first time and am a little clueless as to how to begin with the installation of the emu10k1 driver. I've read the readme file on it and it says "The kernel must be compiled." Is this kernel one that I need to download or is it referring to my linux kernel, btw my build is 2.4.18. If anyone can shed some light for me, it'd be greatly appreciated. Sound card specs as follows:
