Sound in general for ALSA/Digital sources.

I just got a new set of Logitech Z5450's so I tried to get my SPDIF Coaxial to work, as I thought that would be easier to get working than the Optical. I get it to work, but it only works with non-AC3/DTS encoded sources, like MP3's and some video files. BUT DVD's and Video files that have AC3 audio only, I can only hear the "surround" stuff, no voices or main sounds. This is true for both, SPDIF and normal 1/8" phone jacks from the back of my computer.

I know the problem is somewhere in ALSA, but I'm really not sure where to look.

Can anyone help guide me in the right direction?

Edit: I just want to make it clear that my sound worked perfectly before, I've accessed the same DVD's and video files before and they've worked perfectly with my other speaker setup(using the single "front" output to a DVD player/ 5.1 system VIA RCA plugs). This is strange now that I can't use anything to hear the audio from these sources.

My hardware is the Onboard sound from my ASUS A8N SLI Premium, I believe it is using the intel8x0 module.

The solution is stupidly simple when you get down to it, it's the fact that you have to change the device.alsa_passthrough_device in your /home/username/.xine/config/ (or in your Kaffeine xine engine parameters under the audio tab in the expert section) has to be set to "default" NOT "iec958:AES0=0x6....."

And make sure that the output speaker arrangement is set to Pass Thorough.

This is the thread that covers it.
