sound in 2.4 kernels

I am compiling a 2.4 kernel and i have a few questions about sound.

1. A. do I need to select any special options to enable ALSA?
B. do I need to select any special options to disable ALSA?

2. I know that alsa is a userspace thing, but If I select the drivers for my card within the kernel configuration, does that make my card run using OSS, or do I need userspace programs to use OSS?

basically I want to use OSS cause very few of my programs are runing well on alsa so thats why I am asking these questions. I cant use a 2.6 kernel yet cause of my winmodem drivers so ill have to use 2.4. I'll probably switch to alsa when I switch to 2.6 but untill then, I would like to use OSS if at all possable.

i think theres an option for "OSS emulation" under alsa during config. enable that.

ok I just used the kernel config from the default slackware kernel and modified it just a little, I didnt even touch the sound section! then I uninstalled ALSA, installed my new kernel and rebooted.

then all I had to do was "modprobe cs46xx" and I had sound. in fact I had more sound than I have ever had with ALSA (keep in mind that I wasnt using alsa cause I had uninstalled it)

so my question is: where does ALSA come into play, as you can see the default slackware kernel suports sound without ALSA, so why is ALSA even there?

so far the only effect alsa has had on me is preventing me from playing games with sound. (I googled and asked around, nothing worked)

from what i know alsa is just a module that has sound suport (but it requires that when u compile your kernel that u must have module suport(duh) and disable sound suport in the kernel
