sound card problem

hi!

i just installed redhat 9.0 and my soundcard doesn't seem to work with linux. it sees it (what type it is and everything...) but when i try to use the sound card it says: "i was not able to open your audio device. please check if you have permission (i run as root) to open /dev/mixer and make sure you have sound support compiled into your kernel".

what can i do ?

thanks

weirdo

What type of soundcard do you have?
Find out what module you should use for this card and use insmod to load the module. Read the manpage for insmod for instructions.

An easy option you could try to use /sbin/sndconfig first.

yup, if you have a legacy soundcard you need to do "sndconfig" to get it up and running. This seems to be a problem with older onboard soundcards. Once you run sndconfig you should be golden...

If you know how made the sound card and the manufacturer, then you could also go here:

http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/?pagename=hcl

Find your sound card and it's corresponding module, then run this as root:

/sbin/insmod "soundcardModule"

Where "soundcardModule" is the name of the module you found on RedHat's HCL page.

Now try "/sbin/lsmod" to see if it was loaded successfully. If it was, then try some sound applications like mpg321, xmms, and so on...
