Sound Card For Linux

Hey All,
I'm looking at buying a new sound card to replace my AWE64 ISA card. Just wanted to get some opinions on which card to buy. I need it to work good, under windows and linux. I have about $40 to spend on sound card. The ones I'm looking at are the

SB Live
SB PCI 512
SB PCI 128
SB PCI 16

I would like to go with the SB Live, but dont think I can find it for $40 dollars around here. I read somewhere that the 512 was a decent card that uses the same linux drivers as the Live. Anybody have sugestions on these cards or any other that work nice under linux? I'm also looking for a card that is easy to configure and get running under multipule distro's.(RedHat/Mandy/SLACK)

Thanks for any replies..

I've had the SB 128 run fine on every distro I've played with, modern versions at least. I don't know if the goofy little utilities in RH or Mandy catch it offhand. I usually just modprobe es1371 and then stick a line in rc.modules for slack or do it the really lazy way in RH and put a line in rc.local. Don't know about the other cards...

Cheers,

SB Live is what I got. Put it in and kudzu detected it and configured it. Tryed to play CD, no sound !!! I'm like WTF the Mic works and I can hear myself breathing into mic. Dont laugh guys it was a honest mistake , the stupid cable going from cd drive to sound card. LOL

So far the card seems really nice, I'm reinstalling RTCW right now and hopefully it will sound better then it did with the AWE.

Thanks for the replies, l8r

Well it sounds good in RTCW. The only problem I'm having is the 2nd output line. The 1st one works fine but I would like to plug a set of headphones into the 2nd output, but it doesnt seem to work, checked the volumes and set them to high but no sound out of 2nd output.

Under windows I had the same problem, but found that the software that comes with the card has different speaker setups that you can select. I selected 4 speaker setup and the 2nd output port worked.

ah oh well, the card is really easy to get working under linux and windows, and thats what i really wanted.

thx for the replies
