sound card again...

i am trying to get my cmedia soundcard to work. i went to their webpage and downloaded the drivers, unzipped them and i am following these directions..

2. Extract the tar file by 'tar xvzf cmpci-xx.tar.gz' in the above
directory.

3. Change directory to /usr/src/linux

4. Config cm8338 driver by 'make menuconfig', 'make config' or
'make xconfig' command.

but when i get to step 4 there is no 'make' command, i've tried all 3 and it give me this error:
'bash: make: command not found'

whats happenin? and how do i get my sound to work??

make is a unix command, it has got nothing to do with your sound card package. check if you have a the make or automake rpm installed, you need to install this pacakage for the make to work. what make does is search for a makefile in the current directory and compile the package according to the rules specified in that file.

good luck

Have you tried:
# modprobe cmpci

This should get your soundcard up and running without having to mess about with custom drivers...

[deezay@deezay deezay]$ modprobe cmpci
bash: modprobe: command not found

would the fact that i have mandrake have anything to do with the lack of commands? or what? what rpm has the 'make' program?
