Sound -- can't play to audio sources simultaneously
Im fairly new to the sound system in GNU/Linux. Mandrake seemed to of configured my audio properly accept i have one big problem and I'll explain it through example.
Im listening to tracks on XMMS and when I try loading a video, with or without sound via XINE Xine will not give me the 'splash'' screen (which is shown when the movie is ready to be played) until I stop XMMS playback. I'd like to be able to play sounds in XMMS and watch movies at the same time. Where Do I begin? Thanks guys. |
you need to use the correct sound output. just using a direct sound output method like OSS requires complete control of the /dev/dsp device, instead you want to use a sound server like esd (gnome) or arts (kde).
and xine sucks. http://mplayerhq.hu |
I selected 'eSound Output Plugin (libesdout.so)' in XMMS put i get no playback. EQ in XMMS shows visual playback (and a bit laggy) but im assuming esd needs proper configuration which im currently looking up. am I on the right path?

Make sure everything uses esd. I have no idea if mplayer or xine will do this. You may want to try aRts as well. They both suck :(
This is a known problem, caused by neither OSS nor ALSA having a software mixer system. |
I've searched tldp.org and google for an easy 'conceptual' guide to sound recording and playback under GNU/Linux but all i find is detailed, cluttered mannuals on kernel compilation, etc. etc.
Anyone know where i can find a 'concept' mannual? Would like to learn the outline before reading the specifics of all teh different types of support thanks |
