I have a couple more Windows XP actions I am trying to replicate.

Currently using Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon

1.) In Windows XP when you are in the "file explorer" you can click and drag a selection/highlighting window to select/highlight multiple files, but when I try this in the Linux Mint file manager this does selection/highlighting window does not exist at all.
Does anyone know if there is a way to replicate this?
I know that you can select a file and hold the shift and or ctrl keys to select more than one file, but I really would a selection window which eliminates the need to use the keyboard to perform this task.

2.)In Windows XP when you have two or more windows opened you can right click in the task bar at the bottom and a menu pops up with the options "tile windows horizontally" and "tile windows vertically" in Windows 7 they are now labeled "tile windows side by side" which snaps the windows....
for example two windows opened it will snap them side by side vertically and if you have four windows opened it will snap them into four squares like this

I know in Linux Mint if you drag a window into right or left corner it will snap that window but I am looking for a way to do this easier as described above.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know

1) in Mint - I hold down the 'crl' key & click on the multiple file(s)
that I want to copy/move to somewhere else.

then paste them elsewhere.
- the right click menu, also gives these options.

1) Try using Thunar (the file manager from XFCE) - I've checked, it has a selection rectangle.

2) There are tiling window managers that always tile whatever windows you have open, while others will give you the option (see here for how to do it on KDE 4.5), but I don't know which DE/WM is the most Windowsesque.

If you're looking to tile terminal screens, I'd recommend you get GNOME Terminator. You can carve it up however you see fit by doing horizontal and vertical splits.

Thank you for the responses, I was hoping these features would have been built into Linux Mint Cinnamon, not a huge deal to have to upgrade, but unfortunately still being new to Linux upgrading leads to even more questions.

For example, with installing something like a alternate file manager in place of the one that comes with Linux Mint Cinnamon, is there a special process of how to implement the new file manager in place of the old?

You should not have to "upgrade."

I'm not running Mint any longer (felt the urge to distro-hop) so I can't check, but I expect you will be able to install Thunar and Terminator from the repos with the Mint Software Center.

Hello, the Cinnamon file manager is called Nemo. go to help and then about in the file manager menu bar just to make sure it says you're using Nemo. I say this because I use Nemo as my file manager under Debian and i can make a selection box. It seems strange to me. Debian software is a bit outdated, so maybe they removed this feature and i've an old version. Nemo is a fork of Nautilus, the Gnome file manager, and Gnome devs do have a habit of removing features.
