Unhappy Some games don't work with audio enabled

All my games used to work but now most of them don't unless I disable audio.
they just freeze, no error message or anything, ctrl-c doesn't work and I need to use kill.

programs that don't work:
Battle for wesnoth
I have no tomatoes
kiki the nanobot

programs that still work:
never winter knights

my kernel version is 2.6.10, distribution is gentoo linux.
the games run fine when I use the kernels dummy sound driver.
my sound card is an AC'97 intel integrated onboard whatever:
ALSA device list:
#0: Intel 82801BA-ICH2 at 0xdc00, irq 17

thanks in advance.
