Solaris v Linux

Can anyone tell me if there is much of a difference between Linux & Solaris.
I am looking for a job in the unix admin area & see alot of jobs for people with a year's Solaris experience.
What I really want to know is are they MUCH different.
Would a proficient Linux user be able to quickly master Solaris or would you need specific solaris training ???
I know theyre both variants of Unix.
Thanks in advance..

Actually I am working on my Solaris Certs right now taking classes. There are their differences and similarities though but still different. If you know alot about Linux, you catch on really easily how they do things in Solaris. Probably the closest thing to Solaris in the Linux world is Slackware, as its the only distro that is the most Unix like, or well, as stayed to its true original form from the beginning.

If you can find somewhere to d/l solaris for Intel please post it. Sun, last I checked, had killed their free binaries ISO download site for x86 boxen. I had heard that a few of the european sun sites still had it up, so if you find one, please man pass the link along.

cheers,

Thanks mate,

Oddly enough soon after I posted that I won a sparc off of ebay and am still in the middle of downloading the ISOs for Solaris Sparc, so I'm going to get a chance to try Solaris on its home platform, wheeee!

I still want to check it out on an Intel machine though.

Anyone know what filesystem Solaris uses and whether there's support for it read or read-write in the Linux kernel?

What are the main advantages Solaris offers if I want to run it on a desktop computer (w/o network)?

I have solaris

Hello all, I downloaded solaris8 a few months ago from sun. I still have the iso image files and even have the companion cd image. If you need it drop me an email and I will post them on my ftp server, then I will email you back the ip address because I don't have a static one yet.

I got the actual Intel Media kit from Sun..(advantages from taking the certification class) if you want I could burn you a copy with all the software cd's as well that come included with the kit.. or if you want maybe another alternative way to getcha a copy, ftp or something.

Hmm... Ultra 5 doesn't get here to Wednesday... must not flip out... must find type 5 keyboard... I've got the ISOs sitting right next to me... must install soon!

I'll keep that in mind Tricky, I'll see how it works out.. Thanks for the offer man.

Cheers,

Finegan

For Finegan
Since we last "spoke" I've obtained 14 xsparc5 85 Mhz, 2x sparc 10 with tms 390 cpu and a sparc 2. Also 7x17" monitors a 19" and a 20". Not telling how little I paid, but not as much as it might have been! With the machines came type 5 keyboards galore, so if you want one, I could ship one over to you for what it cost me plus shipping. You'll probably find one in the US though.
As to the machines, if any LQ members in the UK are interested in buying one, email me, they're going on Ebay, but willing to sell outside, also got some firewall boxen.
Hope this doesn't constitute an advert or a breach of my membership. If so someone moderate me quickly!
Jim (becoming a secondhand computerdealer!) actually escaped from win now as well!
