Software Update recommends 1000+ updates (everything?)

I'm running Debian 7 (Wheezy) on a desktop system. Occasionally I get notifications of available software updates, which generally come a few at a time.

Today the Software Update application (gpk-update-viewer) is telling me that 1392 updates are available. I took a quick look at the list and, without checking every single item, I suspect that the list may include every application, every library, every utility, pretty much every piece of software on the system.

I assume this is a bug. Does anyone know what's going on?

wheezy is EOL anyhow, so you shouldn't be able to update it anymore.

Now I think I'm getting somewhere. In the output posted above, I see a lot of references to a new line I recently added to /etc/apt/sources.list as I had read in some instructions for installing restic (which didn't install successfully so far). The offending line seems to be:

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian buster main
Now I recognize buster as a nickname for a more recent version of Debian. If I comment out that line, Software Update no longer recommends updating all those packages; it says there are no software updates available for my computer at this time. Also the output from apt-get update is a bit shorter.

Now I will mark this question as solved, and look into the version upgrade in the near future.

Beryllos, you should be very, very glad that you didn't go ahead with that upgrade.
