Software RAID

Just a quick question - I have a SATA card installed which supports RAID but the more I think about it the more I may want to use software RAID - if the card fails and I can't get an exact replacement I guess I would be rebuilding the arrays.
So is software RAID tied to the card installed or could the card be changed and the all run the same (guessing this is the case) - also is it particularilt CPU/memory intensive (running a PIII 450 - 512 RAM) or would this handle it ok?

You can also use software raid with "normal" sata connectors (e.g. onboard controllers).

It's an old mobo - only has IDE......
