Software RAID 5 on RedHat 8.0
 

I am running RedHat 8.0 using 3 ide drives with Software RAID 5. It appears I have lost one drive and I can't get to /dev/md1 partition.

Running fsck gives me the following;

[root@life sbin]# fsck /dev/md1
fsck 1.27 (8-Mar-2002)
e2fsck 1.27 (8-Mar-2002)
fsck.ext2: Invalid argument while trying to open /dev/md1

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>



I have two questions,
1. What should the superblock number? This should be ext3, not ext2.
2. What are the procedures for replacing the bad drive?

The only way to boot the machine was remove the mounting of /dev/md1 from /etc/mtab
