software management question (rpms and self-built)

First, I wanted to uninstall my Xwindows system and everything associated with it on my rh9 box, but the rpm utility has no way of automatically removing dependencies. Is there a program out there that will remove a package and all the packages that are dependant on that package?

Second, how do you manage software that's been installed from source? I assume you can mostly just remove the installation directory, but I suppose there may be some caveats I don't know about.

TIA,
Paul

Use checkinstall to create a rpm from the tarball then install the rpm. The procedure to create the rpm is:
./configure
make
checkinstall

For source packages that you have already installed from source you can go through the install procedure again using checkinstall. That way you install the rpm on top of the existing files. Then you remove the package with:
rpm -e packagename
