soft freeze with recompiled kernel

I've recently started to play around with kernel compiling and I must say it's really fun!

However, I have this really annoying problem. Any of the kernels I've compiled boot fine, the startup scripts fire off, and just before I'm supposed to reach the login prompt, it freezes. It's a sort of whimpy freeze too; I can make a clean reboot with ctrl-alt-del, i.e. linux goes into init 6, shuts down services and restarts my system.

I'm compiling a 2.6.9 kernel.

Any ideas on what it can be?

Many thanks in advance.

Does it freeze before you get to a graphical login? Are you using an NVIDIA or ATI card with binary drivers?

Seeya,
Finn.

thanks for the reply

no, it's a minimal debian install with just the essentials; good ol' console login. I do have an ati-card, but I've compiled the kernel with vesa and it boots fine with the tux-logo and all. There are no graphical problems at all so far.

This is the last bit of my /var/log/messages, from just before I call for reboot (I think). It doesn't even give an error message. Very strange. What does "-- MARK --" (line 7) mean?
