....So im making my own input device....

Quite a while back, when i was still running M$W*ndows, i came across this (a guide to creating a remote control for winamp through a serial port(not an IR remote)).
i made the remote control and used it happily for quite a while.
now that i am on linux, i miss being able to control winamp (or in this case xmms) from my bed.
so im trying to figgure out how i can get the remote working again.
the remote its self is very simple, it basically is 4 or 5 momentary switches connecting the different pins in the serial port. all i would need to do make linux think that pressing a button means a certain key from the keyboard, and i would be set.

is there any (easy) way to do this?
writing a device driver is probably beyond me, but if someone has some links to help me out trying, id look at them.

thanks for any help, Poiuytrewq.

You may look at the source code of different lirc (infrared) drivers or lirc-xmms-plugins @ www.lirc.org. Infrared operates very similar to a serial port.
