So does this mean windows is good, or bad?

Discovered a website (http://www.winforums.org/) It seems to have less posts than linux questions does.

So I'd ask myself does this mean that windows is better, or that because 96% of Windows users have taken their daily problems for granted and accepted it as a normal thing while using their computer.

I think it's the second explanation personally.

-- What a sad world it is when people have come to accept their system crashing every day. God I thank you for Linux (and even UNIX for that matter!)

One thing I did notice is theres more topics for the NT/200/XP.
I'd place a bet saying that most of the problems come from the XP machines!

it could just be a small forum, after all the forums at microsoft.com are, well thers quite a lot of them, and quite a lot of pages, but im not sure how many, but that is sad because im sure many people take the problems for granted, and that besides that, microsoft gets flooded with error reports (stupid windows xp feature)

Seeing how netcraft.com say that winforums.org is running Linux. I'm going to say that Linux is better!

haha mail.microsoft.com is hosted on linux as well... if ya didn't know ;-)

I heard that Microsoft.com is hosted off of IIS but they have 30 Compaq servers clustered togeather cause a single IIS server wouldn't be able to handle the traffic.

MAIL.MICROSOFT.COM is hosted off a linux box though, probably because they got tired of having to buy a whole lot of servers and clustering them

Probably just a small forum, thing I've found though because of the omnipresence of windows everyone is bound to know someone else that uses windows and when something goes belly-up they "phone a friend" (who wants to be a millionaire comparisons, chortle...), phone a £1.50 a minute support line or phone their ISP and ask them why their printer isn't working  There are probably a good few heavily populated forums out there though.

Yeah, yer right, I don't know

(There's a good few people out there, my family included who have no interest in sorting things out themselves and would find searching for a forum or anywhere else out their on the web far too much an inconvenience and disruption to their normal endless msn messenger sessions than they could bare)

I really do find a lot of info out there for tweeks and such for windows.

I think the reason that there is not more info on problems is mainly due to the fact that there is not much you can do about it. Really if something does not work you are just waiting around for a patch. If it's actually hosed your only logical option is to reinstall from scratch.

Notice how all computers come with a restore disk now. That's because once it's hose it's pretty much useless.

A lot of people can usually fix windows problems, but the normal user is not going to be able to do it without paying someone. It's much easier to just reinstall.

Actually, it means you have not found very many forums.
There are many, many, more forums and groups for both Linux and Windows than these two.

In Windows, the most common answers to a problem is "Re-install the driver" or "Re-install the OS".
That usually fixes the problem.

In Linux, you make modifications to a configuration file.
It is much easier to fix a problem when the configurations files are in ASCII.

As anyone here ever tried to modify something in the Windows Registry ?
Good Luck and don't make a mistake. :p

:twocents:

Yep, I think that's one of the major downfalls of windows. The registry is too hard to figure out. Everything crammed in there and if something's not right there's very little chance of correcting it.

The other main problem is explorer / IE. The windows window manager. It's just not very forgiving in my opinion. It just locks up and then your system needs to be reset.
