SMTP problem

Hi

An smtp problem has arisen recently and it's got me stumped. I'm using Mepis 6.5 and Thunderbird 1.5.13. I can receive emails but I cannot send any using either Thunderbird or Kmail. The latter defaults to the outbox "stating problem connecting to the server".

Unusually however if I access Firefox and use Yahoo mail to send emails it works. I do not recall ever setting up a mail account with BT/Yahoo and must assume it was done when I originally initiated Firefox years ago. The smtp server is exactly the same and has not changed at all. A week ago I could send emails using Thunderbird with no problem at all.

Anyone got ideas how I may trace the down and resolve the problem?

Use a sniffer and capture the outgoing packets to see where the exact problem is. Or you could telnet to the smtp server and send a mail (all cli) to check what sort of a problem shows up.
Sniffer==Wireshark

Some times its just a temporary problem with a mail server and it could go away automatically. (this is, if you are not running the mail server)
