Slow telnet and ftp dns problems

When trying to login to my ftp or telnet servers from inside my lan it lags terribly and takes a long time to get to the login screen. It works fine once at the login screen but takes forever to reach it. When I alter nsswitch.conf and change this entry
hosts: files dns

to this entry

hosts: files

it fixes the problem but now my linux box can't lookup hostnames in terminal apps like ftp and lynx. Please help

Thanks

The line means it will first search files (/etc/hosts) and then the dns. So if you add the entry in /etc/hosts then it won't try looking in dns for that server.
