A slit is a rectangle defined by your WM that can hold dockapps such as gkrellm or wmxmms. It is not your taskbar. The apps running within the slit do not have usual window decoration, occupy less screen size and are little gizmos to monitor your system operation, change tracks on your mp3 player etc. Once the dockapps go into the slit, they are positioned as a whole via the slit.
I dont know what window makers you are talking about, but check out fluxbox screenshots.
and FAQ.

As I said, it is not the taskbar (or titlebar as you call it). Please read the posts carefully and visit the link and checkout the fluxbox screenshots.
