Would this by any chance be online and how could I go about accessing this? FYI, 1904 isn't javascript, it's the year. I know next to nothing about the Smithsonian Institute and I imagine the U.S. Government printing office does a lot of printing.

I joined something in your honour (Some Smithsonian Institute library?). I got to page through your link. I don't know if we have the same document. I can't d/l it, and it's 216 pages, but the reference is to pages 613, & 615. The thing is, I'm using it as a reference in something, I have the quote, but it's secondhand. It's such a minority area, that many have an opinion on every other person who wrote in this area, and the trick is not to find someone who makes your point, but to find someone well respected who makes your point.

EDIT: I finally got a text download (fine as cups is a lazy man's frontend to ghostscript as a file-to-pdf converter). O.F. Herz spent ~10 years in Siberia, and submitted reports in 1894 & 1903. By the time that got to Government Press Office and out, it could well have been 1904! Judging by page numbers, it's the 1903 report. Working on getting his paper.

@ondoho:@ It's the page through version of the actual report, Not an index. O.F. Herz did visit Berezovka and write about the actual Mammoth. All the downloads, however, come out as 0 byte files(In firefox, lynx and with wget). Sadly, he doesn't make the point I was making and attributed to him by some overzealous enthusiasts. My editing is evidently not complete. Sadly, also, their page through interface is a total disaster, and I am going to have to read another 10 pages!

@sevendogsbsd: It seems to be the report from 1904, sure. I'd have to buy it, which I would I suppose if there was no other choice - but there is. I'd also need the 1903 report printed in 1904 by the Government Press(about research in 1901 - the world revolved slower then).

Got it, thanks. My article is P 611. Firefox only gives me null files, but wget got it.

Another guy who was on the site from St Petersburgh (a city that's been renamed more often than I care to remember) by the name of E. W. Pfizenmayer wrote his work up in a more useful manner (In Russian). Fortunately, as with nearly all major languages, because of my religion, I have access to guys fluent in Russian. One of them has a site up giving details of this particular beast, and others of interest.

^ PS & FYI: when i downloaded yesterday, the epub seemed to be actual text, whereas the PDF seemed to consist of scanned images. i found the epub vastly easier to work with, the pdf actually hung my machine for a minute or so.

The pdf is definitely slower - pics, it seeme. But if it's scanned (Speaking as someone who did a fair bit of it once) it is an excellent job. All pages perfect, no wear marks. Also, on my box, the background loads before the text. If there was some handy way of disabling the background . . .
Maybe Mind you, for the amount I'm gonna use it, I won't bother. I (and you) went to all this trouble looking him up only to discover he was a blockhead. I was off chasing up another one (Saturday Evening Post 1960) before I discovered the guy was wacky, and I could wipe that freely in favour of sane contributions. I'll have to check these more thoroughly now and not accept anything I haven't seen .
