On redhat 7.2 how would you cause the

system to enter a rest or sleep mode

after a given length of inactivity ?

My screen saver comes up but system

never seems to "rest"

In your XF86Config(-4) file add the following lines to the "Server Flags" section,
Code:
Option "BlankTime" "30"
Option "SuspendTime "60"
Restart X and this will blank the screen after 30min and put the moniter into standby after 60min, you can change the time outs to what ever you prefer as long as its in minutes.

I had the same problem, but the X-server solution outlined by Aussie would not work because I wanted the monitor to suspend when no user was logged on, i.e., no X-server running.

The solution is to add the following line to /etc/rc.d/rc.local

setterm -powerdown xx

where xx is the time (in minutes) after which you want the monitor to powerdown.

I'm pretty sure there is also a hdparm to spin down the hard disk, but I haven't gotten to that yet....
