Slackware sound works only every other time, what the heck?
I have a fairly fresh install of Slack 8. I recompiled my kernel with builtin support for my soundcard (some esoniq audio pci thingy, if it were as a module it would use ac97_codec and es1371). So now I have this insanely infuriating problem. Sound works only on every other boot. I just don't get it. One time it will work great, reboot, it doesn't work, reboot and it does again. And the weird thing is I don't get any errors when playing in xmms or mpg123, just silence. /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer are chown'd to my user instead of root if that helps at all. And sound worked fine in RH 7.1, so it's not my card.
Any help would be great. Thanks, Ben Weintraub, Portland OR |

Just something to think about i guess |
I recompiled, with sound as modules. Pretty much the same deal. Sound still works only when it feels like it. Very strange.

maybe...
Perhaps the fact that I have sound built into my motherboard and also a sound card but only want to use the soundcard is messing things up? How do I tell Linux which one to use?
