Hi,

Not to slam your title but Slackware is a registered trademark.
Do you have permission to use the Slackware portion of your 'Slackware4Christians 12.2 Live for CD, USB, and Hard Drive!' statement? Even the abbreviated word 'Slack' is a gotcha.

linus72, you've been a member long enough to know it is better to include your list or data within vbcode tags so as to make the post cleaner therefore easier to read.

This isn't a dig at anyone, but what makes a distro specifically for christians? I've seen a couple of distro's that make that claim, and I just don't get it. Maybe fortune gives a bible verse instead of it's nonsense? The cursur is a tau?

Mornin guys

OK Onebuck, I will change name
but I dont know anything about vbcode tags...

and Damgar; what makes a distro specifically for anyone?
there's muslim distro's, and devil-worship distros....

This is for Christians, but not just for Christians.
It has many cool features and is a great tool for learning Slackware and Linux
without risking hard drive,etc
And its for doing Bible studies, etc on persistent USB,etc

Anyone try it yet?
Please try it before you bash it

Hi,

You can use the vbcode tags which are the # or Quote. These are at the top of the reply window. '#' for code and the balloon to the left of # is for Quote.

No offence, but Linux is a trademark and I don't see a "®" symbol after every instance of "Linux" on this site.

Just curious.

Hi,

Public usage is not a infringement. If someone uses the Trademarked symbol or label for gain or like then the rights of the registrar can be enforced.

Quote:
excerpt from 'Trademark';

Trademark infringement is a violation of the exclusive rights attaching to a trademark without the authorization of the trademark owner or any licensees (provided that such authorization was within the scope of the license). Infringement may occur when one party, the "infringer", uses a trademark which is identical or confusingly similar to a trademark owned by another party, in relation to products or services which are identical or similar to the products or services which the registration covers. An owner of a trademark may commence legal proceedings against a party which infringes its registration.

In many countries, but not in the United States, which recognizes common law trademark rights, a trademark which is not registered cannot be "infringed" as such, and the trademark owner cannot bring infringement proceedings. Instead, the owner may be able to commence proceedings under the common law for passing off or misrepresentation, or under legislation which prohibits unfair business practices. In some jurisdictions, infringement of trade dress may also be actionable.

Where the respective marks or products or services are not identical, similarity will generally be assessed by reference to whether there is a likelihood of confusion that consumers will believe the products or services originated from the trademark owner.

Well, I dont want a flame war on this issue, so I will change name, etc
However, ther are others that make use of certain names, etc like Slack-Mini-Server, and some Debian
homemade distros,etc.

Anyway; IF anyone wants to install to a ext3 formatted partition and boot with Lilo
Here's how I just did it-
Assuming your installing to /dev/hda1 and hda2 is swap

Step 1)
Boot off CD or USB in "Fresh" mode.
If using persistent mode all your new apps, etc will also be installed
Login to root Desktop. Also do update-menu if necessary.

Step 2)
Using Gparted create and/or format a partition of at least 3.5GB+
Also use Gparted to set boot flag active for hda1

Step 3)
Make a directory to mount the partition on, and mount it.

Code:
mkdir /target
mount /dev/hda1 /target
Step 4)
Start copying CD filesystem to mounted target partition

Code:
cp -R --preserve /bin /target
cp -R --preserve /boot /target
cp -R --preserve /dev /target
cp -R --preserve /etc /target
cp -R --preserve /home /target
cp -R --preserve /lib /target
cp -R --preserve /opt /target
cp -R --preserve /root /target
cp -R --preserve /sbin /target
cp -R --preserve /srv /target
cp -R --preserve /usr /target
cp -R --preserve /var /target
Now, make the other directories to complete filesystem

Code:
mkdir -p /target/media
mkdir -p /target/mnt
mkdir -p /target/proc
mkdir -p /target/sys
mkdir -p /target/tmp
Step 5)
Create a /etc/mtab and /etc/fstab files for new install

Use nano, vi or leafpad, for hda1 like this

/etc/fstab
Code:
/dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,owner,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
and heres /etc/mtab

Code:
/dev/root / ext3 rw,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0
/proc /proc proc rw 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs rw 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs rw 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs rw 0 0
Step 6)
Chroot into partition and Setup Lilo to boot partition.

Code:
mount --bind /dev/ /target/dev
mount -t proc none /target/proc
mount -t sysfs none /target/sys
mount -t devpts none /target/dev/pts

export HOME=/root
export LC_ALL=C

chroot /target
Now your chrooted into your install on hda1
and now must make a /etc/lilo.conf to boot
there should already be one in /etc or now in /target/etc

Open it with Leafpad and it should look similar to this-

Code:
# LILO configuration file
# generated by 'liloconfig'
#
# Start LILO global section
boot = /dev/hda # Installs Lilo to MBR
# boot = /dev/hda1 # Installs Lilo to root of partition
#compact # faster, but won't work on all systems.
# Boot BMP Image.
# Bitmap in BMP format: 640x480x8
# bitmap = /boot/slack.bmp
# Menu colors (foreground, background, shadow, highlighted
# foreground, highlighted background, highlighted shadow):
# bmp-colors = 255,0,255,0,255,0
# Location of the option table: location x, location y, number of
# columns, lines per column (max 15), "spill" (this is how many
# entries must be in the first column before the next begins to
# be used. We don't specify it here, as there's just one column.
# bmp-table = 60,6,1,16
# Timer location x, timer location y, foreground color,
# background color, shadow color.
# bmp-timer = 65,27,0,255
# Standard menu.
# Or, you can comment out the bitmap menu above and
# use a boot message with the standard menu:
#message = /boot/boot_message.txt

# Append any additional kernel parameters:
append=" vt.default_utf8=0"
prompt
timeout = 50
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
# vga = 773
# Normal VGA console
# vga = normal
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x64k
# vga=791
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x32k
# vga=790
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
# vga=773
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x64k
 vga=788
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x32k
# vga=787
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x256
# vga=771
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x64k
# vga=785
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x32k
# vga=784
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x256
# vga=769
# ramdisk = 0 # paranoia setting
# End LILO global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz
  root = /dev/hda1
  label = S4C-12.2
read-only # Partitions should be mounted read-only for checking
# Linux bootable partition config ends
Look at the top part and comment or uncomment whether you want Lilo
installed to root of hda1 or to MBR.
It is set there to install Lilo to MBR
If dual booting with Windows see any info you need thru Google or here at LQ!
If you have Ubuntu or similar installed somewhere, just install Lilo to root of partition and then boot into
your buntu setup and issue "update-grub" and buntu should setup
the grub.cfg
You dont need a initrd with this kernel if using ext2/ext3 partition, etc

Once all thats done, go back to your terminal where you chrooted into /target and install Lilo

Code:
/sbin/lilo
Now, exit from chroot, unmount everything and reboot.
back at terminal enter

Code:
exit
umount -l -f /target/proc
umount -l -f /target/sys
umount /target/dev/pts
umount /target/dev
umount /target
Bam! your done, reboot and enjoy the hard drive install!

Did I miss anything?

Hi,

I do want to add this about 'Slackware';

Quote:
excerpt from 'COPYRIGHT.TXT';

Slackware is a registered trademark of Patrick Volkerding and Slackware Linux, Inc.
Permission to use the Slackware trademark to refer to the Slackware distribution
of Linux is hereby granted if the following conditions are met:

1. In order to be called "Slackware", the distribution may not be altered
from the way it appears on the central FTP site (ftp.slackware.com). This
is to protect the integrity, reliability, and reputation of the Slackware
distribution. (Note that moving entire directories like "source" or
"contrib" to a second CD-ROM is allowable, but leaving them out and
distributing a single source-free disc is *not*, as indicated below)
Anyone wishing to distribute an altered version must have the changes
approved by volkerdi@slackware.com (i.e. certified to be reasonably
bug-free). If the changed distribution meets the required standards for
quality, then written permission to use the Slackware trademark may be
provided.

2. All related source code must be included. (This is also required by the
GNU General Public License, and other licenses)

3. Except by written permission from Slackware Linux, Inc., the Slackware
trademark may not be used as (or as part of) a product name, company
name, or registered domain name.

4. Any approved use of "Slackware" must be followed by a circle-R, and must
acknowledge our ownership of the mark.

Note that you can still redistribute a distribution that doesn't meet these
criteria, you just can't call it "Slackware". Personally, I hate restricting
things in any way, but these restrictions are not designed to make life
difficult for anyone. I just want to make sure that bugs are not added to
commercial redistributions of Slackware. They have been in the past, and
the resulting requests for help have flooded my mailbox! I'm just trying to
make sure that I have some recourse when something like that happens.

Any questions about this policy should be directed to:
Patrick Volkerding <volkerdi@slackware.com>

Sorry guys but why do people even try to do religion-flavoured distros? Seriously what IS the point?! Your religion is your private system of beliefs and has nothing to do with bash/gimp/firefox/kernel,etc. Why do poeple like mixing religion with everything now. Religion in politics is hardly bearable, now even computing?! Why don't we do distros like: Ubuntu the Marxist edition, Slackware the communist edition, Debian the left-wing edition? Mandriva the postmodernist edition? Can you see the absurdity of those?

@Linux72, sorry, it's not a go at you. Perhaps, it's just me missing something to understand the rationale for such distros. If it's just the standard ubuntu or slackware + 1 or 2 packages to read the bible, then it's just a very cheap marketing gimmick.

Actually sycamorex; this is not a thread for you to ask that question.
There are, and will always be distro's based on religion
just as there will be ones for multimedia creation, 3D graphics, security, etc

And the Ubuntu Christian distro is heavily Catholic based with effigy wallpapers, etc
thus it is not for a great many Christians who oppose Catholicism.
While non-denominational; my distro is aimed at Protestent or non-denominational Christians.

Additionally; its not just Bibletime added to Slack 12.2
its alot more than that.
I guess you would have to try it to know that though....

+1 although I was trying to hold back wanting to find out what made it christian-specific and just generally not offend.

I should mention that it actually looks interesting, at least to see how it's all put together. I like slax, Salix and of course Slackware.

I rather liked my idea of modifying fortune to target a specific audience.

apology not needed brother
I dont want a war with anyone on this issue

As I said, I will/am changing name,etc
My bad for that.

Also, let me clean up some comments..
by effigy I mean the wallpaper in Ubuntu CE with Christ on a cross
this is an effigy, and no "images" should be shown of Christ, etc
especially since no one knows what He looked like anyway.
I mean does anyone really think he was a blue eyed american-looking person?
I doubt it.

And no slight to Ubuntu CE, they may or may not be Catholic, and I'm not bashing Catholicism, Islam, etc
Your right to freedom of religion is same as mine and its all good what you believe in,etc

EDIT:
yeas, damgar, I made many many neat things like sbopkg, pkgtool, liloconfig, etc popping up
in xterm from menu
Made the jwm from source and really tricked it out
added as many improvements as I could think of except a hdd installer as I dont wanna mess up
anyones PC if I made a mistake in script or something.

I had to do alot of McGwyverin setting up alot of stuff and I
added all kinds of stuff from various Slack contributers.
Please try it in Qemu, Vbox or off USB
and you will see it can also be a rescue CD, has many writing apps
and can be installed to hdd as above.
