Skype & microphones / mics

Hi all

Thought it best to put this in a forum.

See this here if Skype only works the first time:
...basically you should use OSS over alsa.

One thing I've seen in the Skype forums is that you need the latest ALSA for the new Skype betas to work using ALSA. I think the minimum acceptable ALSA version is 1.0.13. Anything earlier than that and you'll have weird, choppy sound.

Yes, don't use OSS -- for anything. If Skype is not working with ALSA, I would consider that breakage in Skype.

OSS is slated to be completely removed from the kernel in short order and many cards do not have OSS drivers. I know ALSA provides an OSS compatibility layer, but that's intended for things not yet upgraded to handle ALSA, not to handle buggy software.

the last skype has now alsa
and works great
