SiS 7018 sound problems

Hey all. I've got Redhat 7.3 running on an AMD 1500+ with 128mb mem, with onboard SiS ethernet, video, and sound. Everything's working peachy (well, mostly), save for the sound. I've run Redhat's sndconfig and it detects it correctly and modifies the /etc/modules.conf to load the trident driver. On load, dmesg shows no errors, and lsmod shows all the appropriate sound modules loaded. Everything looks okay.... except when I try to play sound. Nothing comes out. Even a simple cat audio.wav > /dev/dsp (or /dev/audio) doesn't produce anything. Using aumix to adjust volume, and everything's fine, nothing muted, and when adjusting the volume, I can hear the speaker static raise and lower with the volume. Xmms doesn't produce any sound using any output -- esd, oss, or alsa... rather it opens an mp3 file and runs through it reeeeeally fast -- oscillator flying, seconds ticking by at at least double speed..... which is reeeeeally weird.

I've set up these onboard SiS devices in linux before -- running a similar mobo with the same SiS devices under Gentoo with no problems at all -- full SiS 7018 sound. If anybody's got any suggestions, well, I'd be quite enthused to hear them... I'm completely out of ideas.

Thanks.

Have you checked the permissions on /dev/dsp etc....?

Yeah -- both are owned by the user (single-user comp), not root. Still wouldn't explain Xmms's odd behavior, would it? It's as if the hardware's all set up, but the computer has no idea how to send sound data to it. I'm boggled.

Don't know about redhat - maybe it tries to run with alsa and that doesn't work too well.I never had a problem with OSS on various distros. You might want to look what that sndconfig of redhat configs.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled alsa, with the same results. Again, I get no errors in reference to sound, and everything's configured correctly (I think) -- just, well, no sound, and the weird Xmms behavior.

Have a look at this thread on the LKML, seems to be the same problem as you have and points the finger at the trident module.

[Edit: Have a look at this 2.4.20-rc4-ac1 changelog, if you do a search for 'trident' you'll find five updates that have already been merged, so I'd say upgrade to 2.4.20 when it arrives (should be soon) and see if that fixes the sound problem.
