Simplified Linux

Is there a version of Linux or any other OS (non-MS) that does not require the desktop single user to jump thru hoops with permissions, mounts and other such nonsense?

i think linspire runs the user with root permissions. or you could run a knoppix cd.

personally i like the nonsense, it makes me feel safer.

I have Knoppix, it's not bad. At least it shows all my hardware on the desktop without fiddling with mounts.

But safe from what? Yourself?

I'm talking about single user desktops.

Yes, safe from yourself. Linux root has more power than Windows administrator, in another word, more destructive. root can do anything he would like to do, no matter how crazy it is, for example:
under root shell, I want to copy a file to /mnt/hda1, but I accidentally type cp file /dev/hda1, when I realize what happened, the first partiton has already gone.
