Angry Simple Serial Connection

I want to configure my DSL modem thru the serial port of my Linux machine. This seems like it should be the simplest task but I have yet to figure out how to do it. Every tool I have tried expects a modem attached. cat and redirecting doesn't work properly. I did this with a Windows 95 using hyperterminal (to COM 1) and it took 1 minute to set up. I have spent at least 8 hours messing with this and I am at my wits end.

Surely there is some comm. program, like talk, that works with /dev/ttyS0.
