simple 1cd distro with XFCE
 

My friend has finally gotten fed up with waiting 10 minutes for his 4 year old Dell to boot (it booted in under 1 minute when it was brand new) and wants to try Linux. I've tried quite a few Linux distros, and the fastest distro for a newbie that came with XFCE was Vector (I would pick Slackware for the advanced Linux user that wants speed on an old pc). Unfortunately, Vector seemed to have phased out XFCE from the default desktop cd install (though downloading and installing is doable).

I want him to have a full Linux distro from a 1 CD install that is current (within a couple months of being produced as an ISO). What distro fits these standards?

You could try Zenwalk if you are a fan of Slackware.

Xubuntu 7.04 is only 1 cd

I forgot about XUbuntu. I just started using Ubuntu a couple months ago and like it and Dell is pre-installing this Linux distro on their pcs. XUbuntu probably isn't much different. This may be the way to go for a newbie Linux/Dell user like my friend!

Do they still not compile in support for ISA on the default kernel?

What exactly are they targeting with a Slack-like distro running XFCE but no ISA? That is every old machine that you would want something like this on.

I've never really looked into ISA support because the last time I ran Slack and Zenwalk was on a modern AMD based machine.
