Signal 11 caught by ps :: Permissions issue?

When run by a user, ps consistently produces "Signal 11 caught by ps (procps version 3.1.6)", and top seg-faults. However, both of these programs behave normally when run by root.

I'm running 2.4.21-0.13mdkenterprise.

Is this a permissions problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

No, I"m pretty sure that's a bug in the program. A signal 11 is a segmentation violation, meaning the program is trying to read/write to a section of memory it has no rights to.

Being root really shouldn't change that. Even a program run by root is supposed to stay within its legal bounds. (I won't absolutely guarantee that there isn't a file permissions issue somewhere, but I will guaranteed there shouldn't be one...)

First thing I'd check is whether that's a known bug, and whether there's an update that fixes it.

If you can't find one, report it as one (although I'm not sure whether you should report it to Mandrake or the upstream developers of ps and top. I'm inclined to say Mandrake.

Good luck,
