shutting down a program


umm.. How come it took me 15 minutes to access this site?, was i blocked or something?, i went to dozens of other sites to make sure, it was just this site that i couldnt get on.

anyway, I tried to end a program called privoxy and everytime i do i lockup, how can i stop it from loading on boot up, I didnt know it would automatically start on its own, thanks for any help, oh yea and thanks for the info about privoxy, i think its what i want to use, to whoever it was i was arguing with on the security forum, lol

If its starting on bootup its probably getting started as a daemon from the init scripts. If you don't want it to start on boot, you just need to remove the symbolic link which sits it the directory for the given init level, and which points to the script starting the daemon. Depending on the distro, its in /etc/rc.d/rcN.d or /etc/rcN.d (where N is the runlevel:0-6), or something similar.
