shutdown -h problem

I'm runinng Slack 9.1. Before i had redHat 9 and when i turned off my pc (with shutdown -h now) the computer turned off. But now with slack it goes down normally, but at the message Power down it doesn't automatically turn off. How could i make it to turn off without touching the turn off button? Is there any config file for this. My mb supports this for sure, it worked in redhat, suse, mandrake, knoppix, winxp, now what about slack?

APM support is required for automatic poweroff. Do you have APM support directly in kernel or loaded as a module?

You can find out whether the APM module is loaded using lsmod.
This shows all loaded modules, one should be "apm".
If not, for testing purposes use

modprobe apm

If you don't get error messages, another lsmod should show apm now.
This is only for testing and will not survive a reboot.

shutdown -h should now turn the machine off.

I don't know how to configure modules on Slackware; on Debian all modules to be loaded at boottime are listed in /etc/modules
Early versions of Suse used /etc/modules.conf for this, iirc - which is used for other purposes in Debian.

Anybody here to help out on this?

Not necessaily APM, possibly ACPI instead, depending on what motherboard you have

edit /etc/rc.d/rc.modules
scroll down to APM support and uncomment /sbin/modprobe apm
