Shut it down

ok so I am just interested in different ways to shut a linux system down......atleast 3 of them are:

shutdown -h now
telinit 0
halt

anyother cool methods......just curious......i m sure there must be more , ofcourse that's why I am
"A-dummy" :) ......ok let's increase the options to include even rebooting commands too.....

neo77777 08-04-2002 12:24 AM

poweroff

A-dummy 08-04-2002 01:13 AM

ok so poweroff is also a method (i didn't knew).....i tried kill -9 1 but init seems to respawn itself.....however
if i send

kill -2 1

to init ,the system is rebooted!! .....exclaimation marks are for likes of me who didn't knew this option ,if u
knew this one already dont feel offended :) .....i also tried to increase number of processes by executing
a script which execute itself.....but that didn't worked & shell was exited.....& btw
init 0
also halts it down.....

A-dummy 08-04-2002 02:22 AM

ok here is another one
killall5

it sends kill signal to all processes except the one in which it is....so the system freezes....but it has not
yet been halted/rebooted??.....but what else r u going to do with it now :)

Hit the reset button - quick and dirty tip :D

zLinuxz 08-04-2002 03:28 AM

heheh. Well, if I recall correctly, I believe you can code a script and just make about anything you want shutdown your computer.
i.e. gotohell, sleeptight, etc...I'm sure you can be very creative with this. Then you can impress your friends with it, ;)

A-dummy 08-04-2002 05:57 AM

right now i m impressed with myself :( .....while playing with it,
i made certain changes (or whatever it was) & now i cant
start my X server....right now i m in windows (forgive me God)
doing search on google.....just one thing is coming to mind:
if things can go wrong ,then they will.....

MasterC 08-04-2002 06:40 AM

Forgive me God, bha ha ha ha ha

Good one

I feel dirty every morning when I go home, I have to take a shower because all night I have been using Winbloze at work.

Then I sit there and cry, like that scene from the Crying Game.

ha ha ha ha, poor us who are plagued at work with the M$ Demon! No that's not a mispelling of daemon...

:D

zLinuxz 08-05-2002 01:49 AM

hehhe, dude make a partition without anyone noticing, boot it with a disk every time so no one even knows you got linux in there, and just work on that, hehehheh

Goatdemon 08-05-2002 02:03 AM

when i do a shutdown -h now, all processes are killed but the screen displays a power down message. how can i get the machine to automatically shut completely off, as in green light goes off.

and to shut off i just hit ctrl+alt+del, then hit the off button when it's rebooted.

Atleast windows users can never notice it,that will be demanding
too much from them...or may be u can change all the appearance
of that linux completely to look like XP (in linux u can do it).....to
give it more realistic appearance ,write a script which brings ur
comp to halt every 5-15 mins with a blue screen :) .....perfect
windows....

zLinuxz 08-05-2002 09:53 AM

haha, nice one A-dummy. Then the windows guy is like....hmm I wonder if this is a new feature in Win2k, lol

Goatdeamon, I think you need to find out if your computer is first capable of doing that, check in your bios. also...if you have windows you can check it that way, if it automatically complete shutsdown.

neo77777 08-05-2002 10:27 AM

and to add to zLinuxz's reply use poweroff command
