Showing Distrobution in Command Line?
I have customers that I dial into their systems, but I can't tell which distribution that they are running. Most don't know. Sometimes it is easy with something like SCO, but with the different flavors out there like Redhat, Debian, Mandrake, etc....all I can find is the uname command which really only gives me the kernel version.
Can anybody help ? Thanks, Dom |
uname -a should give more than kernel version, but if you look in /etc most distros (well the one's I've used anyway) will make a file with the version. For example, on my Slack box its:
/etc/slackware-version for Mandy: /etc/mandrake-release So there's one way. Cool |
For Slack, there is a file:
/etc/slackware-version it contains the version of Slack that was installed. |
:)
At least we are consistent :D Cool |
LOL!
All right, I'll just wait until you've logged off before trying to answer any more questions! =-} |
Oh no, don't do that. I am not nearly as competent as you. You definitely have a broader knowledge base than I, I just have a T1 connection :D
Cool |
=-}
I don't have that bad a connection, certainly not T1 (SIGH), but not a dialup either. I guess I'll blame it on having to do too many things at once. . . |
I'm at work, it might be a T3 even, it's the Navy after all. At home I've got a measly DSL at 768/128
Cool |
Do you happen to know anybody in the nuclear subs? A friend of mine
just moved from the base up there. . . |
From Bangor? I don't know any on a sub right now, but I do have a few buddies who have been on em. And I do have a friend stationed in bangor, but he's a Dental Tech, far from any Nuclear Tech.
Nah, for the most part I only know Hospital Corpsman, not really many nukes, but I do know an X weatherman :) Cool |
I don't know exactly where he was stationed, somewhere near Bremerton,
which I *thought* was near Oak Harbor. Anyway. . . |
Yeah, Bremerton is right next to Bangor which is semi-close to Oak Harbor (~ 3 hours around the sound, 1.5 on a ferry). Bremerton is the ship yard, where Bangor is the sub base, and Oak Harbor is the Air Station.
Cool |
Ok, so yeah, it was Bangor. . .
