shortcut to deskop - display desktop...

hey this should be simple:
i reinstalled fedora and now i can't find the desktop launcher that i love so much. you know, the desktop icon at the bottom of the screen that minimizes all the programs you have running... i'm using gnome, fedora core 1.
by the way, got any suggestions about a more versitile desktop than gnome? i like its simplicity (easy to migrate to from windows, and much more powerful), but i think i could handle something a little more accessible...
thanks.

Why not give KDE a go, plus the desktop launcher is there by default

Right click on empty part of panel, "Add to panel" -> Actions -> Show Desktop --- ?

But desktop icons suck, just add a left or right hand side panel, add them there so they're always there and you don't have to fiddle around going back to desktop...

ooooh i like that. how do you do that? i'm just getting into configuring window managers/desktop environments, bear with me. heh. i keep on trying out these cool sounding things like blackbox, openbox, fluxbox, sawfish, aewm++, etc... i see crazy screenshots and think "that could be me!" but have no idea how to get to that point. hell, just switching window managers gave me a hard time. i gotta learn to test out new stuff with a test user...
thanks

just right click on existing panel (empty part)... new panel.. .you should see a new one appear.. just click and drag it diagonally to a side and it will move to the side you want.. just fiddle around.. you can add/edit things on the panel.. just right click it and explore all the options.. you can in properties unexpand it so it just is as big as the icons take up.. umm you can adjust size, etc.. there.. just have fun fiddling around.. try putting a background image in the panel, etc..

umm usually you can just email the authors of those screenshots and ask, or they have explanations under them or nearby..

I just stick with GNOME.. get to know it well and adjust it to suit me.. I also use Fluxbox because of the tabs.. they rock.. try them all out.. but stick with one or two until you know them (window managers, distributions, anything like that) inside out.. it's the best way..
