several simple problems
Hey good peoples, just got back from 2 weeks of vacation.
Went camping for a week in south limburg, and visited my family the other week in utrecht. Back to the same old boring rituals....
I have a few minor problems that I´m sure some of you can help me with.
1. X starts and runs like a dream, but when starting and/or exiting X, it complains about not being able to find the hostname, and says my system is severely misconfigured which I know is not true because my system works just fine. I´m using bsd style inits, and my hostname gats set up when I boot up. I have the hostname set in /etc/HOSTNAME and in /etc/sysconfig/network, although im not sure this file is set up correctly.
2. I installed the alsa drivers, and the drivers appear to load and start correctly, but when I boot my computer and start up kde it complains about /dev/dsp not existing, which I know is linux language for it cant output sound through this. do i need to symlink something somewhere?
3. quake2 works great through wine and winex, but the sound hiccups and is choppy, any ideas what this can be? doesnt matter if I use OSS or alsa...
4. kdm and xdm start up and im able to login in, but after loging in, xdm just simply restarts itself, and kdm logs me in and just opens up an xterm but doesnt go to kde. my xinitrc and .X files are all set up okay, so what´s this?
Thanx in advance...
PEACE OUT

I'd help ya dude, but I have no clue at all.
But to toss something at all out, maybe if you run through XF86Config you can fix the kdm/xdm problem. But like I said, I have got not a single clue on any of those.

dont be frightened to read the post, there are no satanic incantations contained within it which will summon up vile daemons from the depths of hell.

atleast for X , mine too complains something about hostname
when starting (i hv never noticed it during shutdown) but it
works fine......as for sound type gmix , see if it improves it....
4) try typing startkde on that xterm , see what errors it gives(if
it gives any)......
frankly, I have no idea what's wrong with you....pls also give
details of what you have tried so far.....some error messages???
