Well to set variables within your own shell, you have to put:

export WHATEVER=/usr/local/bin
.... this is for your shell

for a global variable you have to append to the already existing PATH that is being exported. I'm not familiar with SuSE so I'm not even going to pretend like I know what I'm talking about, but in Slackware I would edit one of the startup scripts that exports the variable at boot-time.
