setting dev/modem to a value

Hi! I'm running slackware 10, just installed in and I'm almost finished setting everything up. In kppp /dev/mouse doesn't work, but /dev/ttyS4 works fine. I just need to set the value of /dev/mouse to /dev/ttyS4... I'm still a n00b tho, what configuration file would I find this in? thanks!

Does /dev/mouse exist?

ln -s /dev/ttyS4 /dev/mouse

It does, but it's set to the wrong ttyS. Won't I have to type that same line in my shell prompt every time that I log on? or will it automatically be set once I type the ln cmd in?

Delete the existing /dev/modem and then create a new link.
