setting default resolution (already searched)

I want the ability to use ctrl-alt-+ to go up to 1280x1024, but I want my default to be 1152x864. When I use Xconfigurator to select the modes that I want available, it automatically sets the default to 1280x1024 @ 16bits. If I don't select 1280x1024 as one of the options, it runs how I like it, but then I don't get the ability to run up at 1280x1024.

relavtive stuff:
Redhat 7.2
Nvidia GeForce 3 Ti200

thanks

X reads the modes from left to right, rearange the order of the modes so that the one you want as default is first.

Still not working correctly... am I editing the wrong file?

from /etc/X11/XF86Config:
Code:
Section "Screen"
    Driver "accel"
    Device "My Video Card"
    Monitor "CTX7695"
    DefaultColorDepth 24
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 8
        Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "1280x1024"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "1280x1024"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "1280x1024"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 32
        Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "1280x1024"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection

XFree86-3.x.x uses /etc/X11/XF86Config and XFree86-4.x.x uses /etc/X11/XF86-4, you need to restart your x server in order for changes to take effect.

Well, I don't have a /etc/X11/XF86-4, so I guess I'm using XFree86-3.xxxx, and the contents of XF86Config are above, but I'm still running 1280x1024 - even after rebooting the entire machine (making sure that I was restarting x).

any other thoughts?

You can do "XFree86 -version" to check what one is installed and if it says 4.x.x then do "xf86config" to generate a new XF86Config-4. Make sure X is not running if you do "xf86config".
