Seti on other console

Hello,

to assist in the search for life out side of earth i have decided to run seti on my all singing and dancing linux box.

but i would like to use it on one of the unused consoles like tty8 for example.

how would i go about running this either a) manually b) automatacaly at startup?

any one have any ideas?

thanks

When you d/l seti it gives you the idea to add it as a cron job. Another option is the open your /etc/init.d and edit one of the tty's to just run seti instead of getty or anything. Of course I have a very vague idea how to do that, so I will leave it up to the pro's to tell ya.

But to do it manually:
In a gui or whatever press CTRL+ALT+F(whichever console you want to use).
Then cd to your seti directory: cd /seti
run seti: ./setiathome
Then switch back to your original console or X:
CTRL+ALT+F7 to go to X or ALT+F1 or whatever to go back to the console you were on.

I've never run seti so I don't know how the program runs but usually if you want to run a program in a terminal like that you would add a line in /etc/inittab something like:

seti:2345:respawn:/usr/bin/seti >/dev/tty8 </dev/tty8

The respawn might be kind of dangerous if you accidently made a mistake and the seti program won't run. So you might want to change the 'respawn' to 'once'. After you are certain it runs properly when you boot up then you can change it to respawn.

i also switched my brain on and ran it like this:

/path/to/seti/setiathome -verbose > /dev/tty5 &

but i am now going to try the init tab method
