Session Character set settings

Hi all!

I hope everyone had a good Turkey break!

I've got a fairly new linux install i just did with the new RH8.0 Install disks and I am trying to find out where to make changes to the default char set that the sessions start up with. If I am on local console it's not a biggie as it works alright. The problem is when I putty over from a MS box and graphics and special formats comeout all wrong.

Ie. "-" don't show up on man pages... I get an "a" with a caret "^" above it. Also if I try to use Midnight Commander the lines are all buggered and the ney defs forn't seem right for the FN keys.

I've compared the settings on the putty side against what I have for another server and they're identical... Soooo this leads me to belive it is in the Charset coding...

Any hints? Thanks in advance guys! :study:

Hi Merana,

I was also getting weird characters with RH8 'tho mine was on the console. the following fixed it :-

In /etc/sysconfig/i18n
change the line: LANG="en_US.UFT-8" to LANG="en_US"
comment out the line: SYSFONT="latarcyrheb-sun16"

it may be a clue to your problem

It's posted in Linux-Newbie as:
"RH8-strange boot-up problem" thread if you want to check it out.
