Server on standby - wakeup on ssh/network access

I would like to put a server to standby as long as it is not in use and to wake it up when I connect via ssh or try to access a network share.

Power down the system and wakeup via wake on lan is no option as there is some manual interaction required to power on the machine.

As the box is headless and I use it from remote, I have no possibility to use a screensaver to suspend and a mouse move to wake up.

Is there a possibility to do so?

Not from anything I'm aware of. waking from stanby - Wake On Lan - requires a specific packet addressed to the machines MAC. you wouldn't be able to use IP addresses and such as that's the operating system's job to manage IP's not the NIC itself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake-on-LAN You'd need a different device, e.g. the gateway routing device your request would pass through, to send a WOL packet on seeing traffic for a known address, something I've never seen myself.
