sendmail configuration over a cable modem

I have a CentOS system running. I want to get mail off it to my yahoo account.

I did a test mailx command and it goes out of the queue but never gets to my yahoo mail.

I am using a cable modem.
I can go out to the Internet so I know I have a valid connection.
I am guessing I need to set something up so the cable company will relay my mail for me.

I know i can pull pop mail down and sen it using my account.

Do I need to configure something in the sendmail.cf file to do this?

I just went into my email and say this ...patial msg included...

(reason: 553 5.7.1 [BL21] Connections will not be accepted from 98.249.136.1

unix1adm 02-19-2010 06:52 PM

so i tried to send to another account and get this:

unix1adm 02-23-2010 07:25 AM

ok i guess no one has tried this before.

i tried several configuration changes but still the mail goes off the server into never never land or gets bounced back.

unix1adm 03-02-2010 06:30 AM

maybe i need to open a new topic b ut i just saw this in my log file. ... also all the mail i sent is in my /var/spool/mqueue dir

sendmail[7069]: o21CduY7007069: SYSERR(root): savemail: cannot save rejected email anywhere

I thought it would save to deadletter under root?

edit:

Ok so i just realized the error in this. Its trying to send to root so its a circular reference. I changed postmaster to be another id for now.

unix1adm 03-02-2010 06:45 AM

Well I am still not able to get the info I need. I tried several Google searches and the links lead me to dead ends so i still dont know what I am missing with this sendmail stuff going out from my server to a yahoo account.

I really dont want to set up a full blown smtp mail server to do this. Most document i find are telling me how to set up a mail server.

I tried 2 different domains. Mind you i edited them so the bots dont spam me. One is to my private domain and one is to my yahoo account.

solve dit with help from another forum... Here is the answer if anyone wants to know

Make an entry in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc, such as:

define(`SMART_HOST',`your.ISPs.mail.server')

might help? That way, your ISP will relay the mail for you (especially useful if they don't allow the use of port 25).

Be sure to do a:

make -C /etc/mail
service sendmail restart

unix1adm 03-03-2010 06:18 AM

Well i get tis email bounced back to my account. I found out yahoo is blocking my isp ip so i sent to my personal account and get a bounce back msg.

This i understand because its trying to bounce the mail back to my server root@localhost.localdomain and thats not valid. But what I dont understand is why is it not just accepting the mail and not trying to send it back.

May be I need to "spoof" my system to look like its coming from my domain? Not sure how or if thats the right thing to do.
All i want to do is get logwatch off my system so I dont have to login to review it.

unix1adm 03-04-2010 07:46 AM

I got this resolved in case any need this info

/etc/sysconfig
more network
NETWORKING=yes
NETWORKING_IPV6=no
HOSTNAME=centos
GATEWAY=192.168.1.1

Looks OK

I modified host file to be
192.168.1.100 centos centos.mydomain.com

I get this:

mailx -v -s "test" root

test

127.0.0.1 centos centos.mydomain.com localhost.localdomain localhost

hostname
centos

so based on the other document I changed the host like yet again

192.168.1.100 centos.mydomain.com centos

Still the mail gets hung on the server.

This is not dhcp by the way but fixed IP.

i put this in the /etc/aliases file
root: myid@mydomain.com

newaliases
I also did a service sendmail restart
