Sending a job straight to background

While a program is running, I can hit [Ctrl]-Z to stop it, and then use bg %N to restart it in the background. Is there a way to send a job straight to the background while it is running - ie. without stopping it first?

(I couldn't figure out if this should go in 'General' or 'Software.')

Not that I know of... Although, you shouldn't have to use the %N -- bg will affect the job that was last stopped.

Maybe using the screen application would help? What app are you using that you want to send straight to the background like this?
